My Education philosophy

How to establish a culture of learning in the classroom?

Different educators provide different perspectives in establishing the culutre with tailor-made pedagogies for the best quality in here and now students' learning. For me, I would offer the following mindset to cultivate our future global citizens.

My Philosophical Statement on Education

I believe every student can be a virtuous learner when a secure, caring and the stimulating atmosphere is provided such that they grow and mature in whole personal development. I have been thinking of being an educator since several teachers inspired me during my school life. To reveal the full potential of pupils, dialogue teaching and experiential learning can guide students to acquire knowledge and to ultimately assist them to become a self-learner. Every teacher has been achieving tertiary education and is well-equipped with knowledge, skill, and attitude for delivering disciplinary understanding to students. For me, I think that educators should tell students “LIE” s in school. I would not only address the issues that schoolteachers should inspire students to view the world in different perspective and to cultivate a sense of caring to society but also involve guidance to practice the following philosophical ideas in our life.

“L” stands for Leadership. With the advancement of Internet development, students can acquire tons of information with multimedia. It is widely concerned that tutees may not know how to analyze all the information and make a prudent decision in their lives. Gurus portray a crucial role in guiding students to achieve their own goals in life. In the classroom or any extra-curricular activities, teachers would pursue opportunities to cultivate students with their own distinctive experience in terms of career path, general view or worldview, etc. This approach can accommodate students’ invaluable guidance in their life, broaden their horizon and perceive the world from an alternative perspective. Nevertheless, teachers should treat each individual as an entity within the social context that students bear the responsibility for decisions and confront others’ views to clarify his or her own. Dialogue teaching among educators and learners encourages sharing different ideas lest limiting from the traditional authoritarian style. Each individual experience is unique, full of self-direction and self-actualization which start with the student rather than on curriculum content.

  • Guidance for students
  • Decision Making
  • Dialogue Teaching
  • Encourage to share ideas
  • Self-actualization

“I” stands for inspiration. In these times, Hong Kong Education has been being criticizing of adopting spoon-feed education which inhibits students a more extraordinary level of thinking in accordance with Bloom’s Taxonomy. For students to scaffold knowledge in school, ones may barely remember, understand and apply so little to lower order like examinations and homework. To some degree, students have to aim for thinking out of the box like analyzing, evaluating and creating hands-on activities; teachers should allocate adequate time and space to reflect on what they have ascertained in the lesson. I do believe that teacher can explore the microcosm in the classroom by allowing individual discoveries and knowledge construction via insights sharing. Teachers come to the classroom not to deliver answers to the students (factual, conceptual or procedural knowledge) but to impart questions to them (meta-cognitive knowledge) for them to further study the world in the aspect of humanity and nature. Their questions become the pursuit of intrinsic values, and identity of “Who am I and what should I do?”. Hence, education becomes meaningful and relevant to one’s life and interests.

  • Think out of the box
  • Learn from discovery
  • Insights sharing
  • Seek for questions
  • Build value and identity

Exciting, e-learning, education

There are many interpretations of the letter “e”. It may refer to exciting, e-learning or education. Not long ago, there has been a paradigm shift in the education, that the learning style in school has been shifted from teacher-centred to student-centred by the inspiration of Carl Rogers.

Delivering knowledge through digital technology is an excitement to students, and acts as the route developing self-directed learning among students and with peers. For the role of Mathematics and Computer Literacy teacher, I would like to implement an innovative and interactive learning style such as the flipped classroom to consolidate students' learning; I would adopt game-based learning and make learning fun with engagement. In the vision of empowering learners, educators need to ensure that novices can learn with the STEM of society through inquiry-based learning, which complies with their demands and deliver individual and collective dreams. Moreover, by implementing digital technology into the classroom, educators can more likely externalize the definition of education: Every learner can learn when there is a condition of effective smart instruction.

  • Student-centered
  • Effective smart Instruction
  • Empowering learners
  • Ignite student’s passion
  • Cultivate Global Citizen

  • Easy access to information
  • Flipped Classroom
  • Consolidate knowledge
  • Innovative learning style
  • Self-directed learning

  • Inquiry-based learning
  • Game-based learning
  • Making learning fun
  • Engage students
  • Motivate intrinsic learning

Consequently, a teacher’s role is to lead, to inspire and to excite learning. Ultimately, students’ passion can be ignited to explore the world and prevail in global citizens in society. I firmly believe that educators are all life-long learners and share their passion with other students, and are passionate, caring and dedicated individuals who enjoy the excitement in education. I always consider the passion in me and strive for excellence in actualizing my potential in the vocation of a teacher.
